This study will randomly assign 2,300 older adults on waiting lists at nine Meals on Wheels programs in Florida, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, and California into two groups who will receive: (a) daily delivery of meals, five days a week or (b) a shipment of 10 frozen meals, every two weeks. Researchers will examine participants' Medicare claims to understand if differences in healthcare utilization occur between the two groups within six months after they start receiving meals. Researchers will also ask participants questions prior to receiving meals, and again at three months, to understand how meals impact their ability to obtain food, their feelings of loneliness, and their overall quality of life. The primary study outcome will be the ratio of days spent in institutional settings (i.e., hospital, nursing home) in the six months after participants begin receiving meals. The secondary outcomes include the ratio of days spent in institutional settings in the three months after participants begin receiving meals, food insecurity, subjective isolation/loneliness, and health-related quality of life. This prospective, randomized crossover trial will enroll adult healthy volunteers. Initially, the subject's peak inspiratory flow will be measured using a mask connected with a respiratory monitor. Subsequently, the volunteers will undergo HFNC treatment at different flow settings while their peak inspiratory flow will be continuously monitored. The primary outcome of this study is the lung aeration with different flow settings. Secondary outcomes include the lung aeration with different devices, subject's comfort at different flow settings, and the correlation between the subject's peak inspiratory flow measured by HFNC and by a mask connected with a respiratory monitor. The primary aim of this clinical trial is to determine the acute effects of OLIPOP (a lower sugar, high fiber prebiotic soda) consumption, compared to consumption of a commercially available sugar-sweetened soda pop, on blood glucose in response to the beverages alone and in combination with a carbohydrate-rich mixed lunch meal in free-living, generally healthy adults.This study will consist of one screening/randomization clinic visit (day 0) and one follow-up clinic visit (day 5), with participants consuming study products on their own (e.g., at home) following an assigned treatment sequence on days 1, 2, 3, and 4. The main questions answered by this trial are the impacts of a prebiotic rich soda versus a traditional soda on: 1) blood glucose levels with and without a meal, 2) perceived hunger levels, 3) perceived alertness levels and 4) total caloric intake. The objective of this pilot study is to evaluate and compare the effect of three different perturbation based training devices on the reactive balance control among healthy young adults, healthy older adults, and neurologically impaired stroke individuals. Furthermore, the project aims to determine the feasibility and tolerability of 30-minutes of perturbation training using the SureFooted Trainer. Overall, the project directs to find out the long term effect of training on fall risk reduction and fall prevention. This study investigates the effects of perturbation training (slip and trip) based on the principles of motor learning. Perturbations in the form of slips and trips induced by the three different types of perturbation devices will displace the center of mass outside the base of support and challenge the stability, thereby inducing a fall and demand compensatory strategies in order to prevent it. Such perturbation training would train the motor system to improve stability control and vertical limb support. The project design aims to examine the ability of the central nervous system to mitigate the interference in stability control (if any) that is induced by opposing types of perturbations. The hypothesis of this study if supported by the results, will provide the difference in motor learning with training on three different perturbation devices. Furthermore, it would help to determine which of the three training devices is the most effective in developing defense mechanisms necessary to reduce fall-risk among community-living older adults and the neurological population.
